Brook Eden Vineyard | Pipers Brook Tasmania

In the vineyard-December

The tedious task of de-suckering continues (removing shoots sprouting from the trunk of the vine). Maybe it's soil-vigour, maybe it's some after effects of last year's frost, or maybe because, like me, these wonderful vines are getting on a bit, but they've managed to sprout more suckers than I do nasal-hair.

We also brush-out and roll-down the bottom cordon of the Scott-Henry trial we are running in the Pinot.  We're trialling it in the most vigouous clone of Pinot and you can almost hear the sigh of releaf as we roll down the canes, opening the canopy up to more light and air.

Our pruning-weights suggest we should be dividing this canopy for optimum leaf-area, so it will be interesting to compare the fruit from these rows and the normal, VSP canopies of the rest of the block.

Flowering is well under way and bang-on expected dates, in spite of the Pinot having a 2 week sleep in and not commencing budburst until October 5.
