In the vineyard-June

June

In previous years, we'd be head down, bum up, giving all the vines their annual haircut by now. But as we try to take Brook Eden down the biodynamic path, we observe the passing of the winter solstice, before relieving the vineyard of its summer growth. So in 2008, the 20th is kick-off day and each vine is assessed for vigour and balance, then given a short-back-and-sides trim, leaving just two canes and two replacement spurs. Depending on variety, and vine fruitfulness, we leave between 7 and 12 buds per cane, plus two buds per spur, giving a total of 90-120 thousand buds-per-hectare. For high-vigour blocks we are also converting the trellising from traditional VSP (vertical shoot positioned) to the Scott-Henry divided canopy system to achieve better leaf-to-fruit ratio and better bunch exposure in the Pinot Noir.
