Ducks and Vines

In the vineyard - August

31 August 2007

All the pruning we were planning to have finished by July, we absolutely definitely finish during August. We’ll mulch all the prunings to put some organic matter back into the soil, make sure the grass in the mid-rows is closely mown and keep an eye on the rain gauge and soil moisture. The young Pinot Gris vines on the bottom block we’ll leave till the first week of September to prune, to help delay their budburst till after potential frosts.

Check all the foliage wires are clipped up and ready for the new season, repair any broken wires or posts, service the spray unit and calibrate it ready for starters orders in case budburst begins before the second week of September.

Take the cuttings (we meant to take in June) from the Lombardy Poplars above the Chardonnay block to propagate.  We desperately need more windbreaks, especially above the Pinot and for the new vineyard.
