Ducks and Vines

In the vineyard-October

The  steady hum of bumble bees; aerial antics of welcome swallows; constant tail displays and raucous calls of the peacocks; swamp harriers (hawks) flying CAP over the wetland and fence-lines in search of mice and rabbits; the teeth rattling clatter of a Bell 206B3 JetRanger at full hover, 10m above the neighbour’s blueberry fields on frost patrol. Ah, it must be Spring.

Continued applications of seaweed have got us through the worst of the frost period again and the real work of vine management can begin. Removing poorly positioned shoots, late-bursting buds and the odd hare, tunneling to China beneath the Pinot, is the order of the day.

The vineyard looks a little more rampant now we no longer use herbicide beneath the vines for weed control. But we hope the improvement in our soils will begin to show in our fruit quality, as early as this vintage .
